Are They Ready for Their Driving Test?

Your learner should be comfortable:

  • Driving without frequent prompts
  • Handling different types of junctions
  • Using roundabouts
  • Parking and carrying out manoeuvres
  • Following road signs and directions
  • Driving on unfamiliar roads
  • Making safe decisions independently
Speak to their driving instructor. Their driving instructor should be an important part of deciding whether they're ready for their practical driving test. They can assess your learner's progress and identify any areas that may need more practice before test day.

Getting Ready for Test Day

A little preparation can help test day feel calmer. Check the practical details in advance so your learner can focus on their driving.

  • Check what they need to take with them on the day.
  • Confirm the test time and location in advance.
  • Check for any updates or changes to their test booking before setting off.
  • Make sure the car meets the requirements if they're using their own vehicle.
  • Plan the journey and allow plenty of time to arrive.
  • Keep things calm and avoid putting them under unnecessary last-minute pressure.
Parent tip: Give them some time to settle before their test. Encouragement and a calm journey to the test centre may be more helpful than trying to squeeze in last-minute advice.

Yes. Your child can use your car for thier practical driving test, provided the car meets DVSA requirements and is correctly insured for the driving test.

The standard UK practical driving test takes around 35 minutes. 

If your child doesn’t pass, the examiner will explain the faults they made.
