Lost log book: Here’s what you need to do

The easiest way to get a replacement log book is to apply online at GOV.UK. You can also apply by phone or post.

Losing a log book can be frustrating. Fortunately, there is a straightforward process for replacing a vehicle log book if it is lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed.

What is a V5C log book?

A vehicle log book (V5C) shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle. It contains essential information about the car including, the make, model, the date it was first registered, and the name and address of the registered keeper.

Typically, the details on the log book will remain the same. However, there may be some occassions where they may differ, for instance, if you change your name, address, or if you make certain modifications to the vehicle. It is essential that the details on the vehicle log book are kept up to date, otherwise, you could receive a fine of up to £1,000 from the DVLA or even face prosecution.

Ordering a new log book

The easiest way to get a replacement vehicle log book is to apply online with the DVLA at GOV.UK. If you cannot get a new log book online, you can also apply by phone or post.

Apply online

To apply for a log book online, you must be the registered keeper and there is a charge of £25 to get a replacement.

You can only apply online if none of your personal details have changed. If any of your details have changed, you will need to complete a V62 application form and post it to the DVLA.

You must have a UK address to apply for a replacement log book. To apply online, you will need the:

  • Vehicle registration number.
  • VIN/chassis number of the vehicle.
  • Name and postcode registered on your V5C log book.

It should take around five working days to receive your replacement log book if you apply online. If you have not received your V5C after two weeks, contact the DVLA.

Apply by phone

If you prefer to apply by phone, contact the DVLA on 0300 790 6802. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 7 pm and Saturdays, 8 am to 2 pm.

Apply by post

Alternatively, you can apply by post for a replacement V5C. You will need to complete a V62 application form, which you can download, or collect from the post office.

Once you have completed the V62 application form, send it to the DVLA along with a cheque or postal order for £25 made payable to DVLA, Swansea.

How long does it take to get a replacement V5C?

You should receive your replacement V5C within five working days if you apply online. However, if you apply by phone, the process takes longer, and you may have to wait up to six weeks to receive your replacement log book.

Can you tax a car without log book?

It is possible to tax your car without the log book. You can tax your vehicle using the reference number from a recent V11 reminder letter. You can also use the green new keeper slip to tax your vehicle, if you have recently purchased it.

It’s quick and easy to tax your vehicle online, or go to your local post office that deals with vehicle tax.

If you’re unable to tax your vehicle, while you wait for your replacement V5C log book to arrive, you will need to declare it off the road (SORN).

How much does it cost to replace a lost V5C log book?

The cost to replace a a V5C log book if it is lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed is £25, which you can pay online by debit or credit card.

How to change the details on a V5C log book

It’s essential to ensure the details on the V5C log book are accurate and up to date. If you fail to inform the DVLA about any changes, you could be fined up to £1,000.

Unlike a lost log book, it’s usually free to update the details on your V5C log book.

To change the vehicle details

To change the vehicle details, complete section 1 of the log book and return the whole log book to DVLA , Swansea, SA99 1BA.

To change your name on your log book

If you’ve changed your name, you will need to inform the DVLA by post. See, Change your name on your vehicle log book for more information.

To change your name if you have the old style log book

  1. Write your name in section 6.
  2. Sign and return the log book to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.
  3. Provide a supporting letter with an explanation of why the name in the log book needs to change.
  4. Include proof if you’re legally changing your name.

To change your name on the new style log book

  1. Fill in section 3.
  2. Send the log book to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA
  3. Provide a supporting letter with an explanation of why the name in the log book needs to change.
  4. Include proof if you’re legally changing your name.

To change log book address

If you only need to update your address, you can do this online between 7 am and 8 pm.

You will need.

  • The vehicle registration number.
  • Your log book document reference number.
  • A UK address.
  • To check if your vehicle needs taxing within 4 weeks.

If your vehicle needs taxing in the next 4 weeks, the quickest and easiest way is to tax your vehicle online.

Buying a car without a log book

You should avoid buying a car without a valid V5C log book as it may be stolen, unsafe or have outstanding finance owed on it. Furthermore, you may also experience problems with taxing the vehicle.
